These advancements demand faster processing speeds, higher core or pixel counts, and smaller process nodes, resulting in lower I/O voltages for protocols like I²C, SPI, GPIO, UART, PMBus, and SMBus. Mismatched I/O voltages can lead to costly "Oops moments," causing communication errors and bit failures. Adding a voltage translator between ICs can resolve these issues for as little as $0.10, avoiding the need for expensive ASIC or MCU redesigns that cost millions.

NLA9306 Voltage-Level Translators

onsemi NLA9306 Voltage-Level Translators are dual bidirectional I²C-bus and SMBus voltage-level translators with an enable (EN) input. These devices are operational from 1.0V to 3.6V [V_ref(1)] and 1.8V to 5.5V [V_bias(ref)(2)]. The onsemi NLA9306 allows bidirectional voltage translations between 1.0V and 5V without using a direction pin. The switch's low ON-state resistance (R_ON) allows connections to be made with minimal propagation delay. The NLA9306 translators can run two buses, one at 400kHz and the other at 100kHz operating frequency.
